Sarasota Mohs Surgery

Here at Suncoast Skin Solutions, our Mohs dermatology & skin cancer center specialists serving Sarasota are proud to offer the renowned Mohs micrographic surgery to our patients. Mohs surgery is one of the top techniques for skin cancer, particularly for basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. The surgery is named for Frederick Mohs, MD, who first started with a chemical fixative technique in the 1930s that allowed for the accurate, detailed removal of cancerous tissue with minimal scarring. This has been a breakthrough in skin cancer treatment, and today’s version of Mohs surgery is both quick and effective.

At Suncoast Skin Solutions, our Mohs dermatology & skin cancer center specialists serving Sarasota use Mohs surgery techniques to excise skin cancer in stages, one layer of tissue at a time. The removed tissue is then examined on site by one of our Mohs histotechnicians, to accurately map and identify any microscopic cancerous cells. This process is unlike conventional skin cancer removal techniques, which typically look only at small areas of the edges of suspicious spots. Our very own Dr. Ewanowski, who is highly trained and experienced in Mohs surgery, examines every edge, including the bottom of the tissue. This special micrographic process allows for highly targeted removal of cancerous cells, while saving as much healthy skin as possible, all during a simple, outpatient procedure.

We are thrilled to report great patient success with our Mohs micrographic surgery, with less than 1% of cancers recurring. This is thanks to the highly refined technique and the steady hands of Dr. Ewanowski, who has performed over 20,000 Mohs procedures. Many of our patients prefer this surgery because it spares the maximum amount of tissue and leaves a smaller wound. After the cancer has been entirely removed, your dermatologist will provide options for repairing the wound, so you can feel confident in looking and feeling your best.
