Fungal infections are a common and frustrating problem for our patients to have. Fungal infections, also commonly referred to by physicians as "tinea", are non-life-threatening infections of the skin caused by the overgrowth of fungi and bacteria. Fungal infections can easily be diagnosed by with a examining a simple scraping of the affected area being looked at under a microscope. The most common kinds of fungal infections we see in our patients include:

  • Ringworm: Also known as tinea capitis, ringworm is a fungal infection that most commonly affects the scalp. Characterized by its signature ring shape, this fungus can hair loss, itching, and flaking of the scalp.
  • Athlete's foot: Also known as tinea pedis, this fungal infection is known for infecting the toes and spaces in between the toes. This contagious infection may be characterized by itching, burning, or dull pain around the affected areas.
  • Jock itch: Also known as tinea cruris, this type of fungal infection typically affected the skin around the groin. This contagious infection may cause itching, flaking, and burning around the affected areas.

What Causes Fungal Infections?
