Many new products are available, such as Radiesse,
composed of microspheres of calcium hydroxyl appetite
suspended in an aqueous gel carrier, or Sculptra, a poly-L-
lactic acid substance requiring multiple treatments.
Restylane and other hyaluronic fillers, maintain their shape
using the body's own moisture. The hyaluronic acid in
Restylane is hydrophilic or "water loving," soaking up, and
retaining water to impart a plumping effect under the skin. As hyaluronic acid gradually degrades, each molecule binds to
more water and over time, the same volume can be maintained
with less hyaluronic acid. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind
to water is what helps provide lasting results.
Lips and nasolabial
folds are areas that respond well to treatment
with injectables such as Restylane, but choosing the correct type
of filler, the right amount of filler, and the timing of the procedure
are choices that separate a great result from an average one.
